Bruce Minto appointed chair of National Museums Scotland
Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish cabinet secretary for culture and external affairs, has announced the appointment of Bruce Minto as the new chair of National Museums Scotland (NMS). Minto will replace Sir Angus Grossart and is the co-founder of corporate law firm Dickson Minto. The appointment will run for four years, with effect from 1 August 2012. Latest CSO figures show increase in visitor numbers to Ireland
Latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have recorded a 0.7 per cent increase in visitor numbers to Ireland during the three-month period between April and June 2012.
The most recent quarter saw a 11.9 per cent growth in the number of residents from the rest of the world - mainly the long-haul and emerging markets - travelling to Ireland.
Visitor numbers from mainland Europe were up 3.8 per cent

New director for Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History

Kirk Johnson has been named director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, DC, with effect from 29 October.
It comes after Cristián Samper announced his decision to step down from the role to become president and CEO of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York City.

Walsall Council approves New Art Gallery recommendations
Walsall Council has agreed a number of recommendations for the town's New Art Gallery (NAG), which will result in the attraction reopening on Sundays from 30 September.
The gallery had been forced to close to the public on Sundays and Mondays due to funding pressures, but the decision has now been reversed in an attempt to increase audiences.

New trust takes over control of Auckland Castle

European Commission approves funding for Burren project
