Treasure hoard on view at British Museum
The Winchester Treasure - a gold jewellery hoard from mid 1st century BC has gone on display at the British Museum after being discovered by a metal detectorist in the autumn of 2000.

All the objects, including two gold necklace torcs, are rare or unparalleled and there have only been two other known finds of gold Iron Age brooches in Britain to date.

Churchill's secret war rooms to open to the public

Visitor centre revives ancient tradition

Rival attractions HM Tower of London and Madame Tussaud's have launched a new joint ticket initiative in a bid to counteract the recent downturn in tourism.

Stonehenge tunnel nearing contract stage

Mayor announces plans to protect public art in Trafalgar Square
The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has announced the formation of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning group, set up to made recommendations on the next piece of public art to appear on the plinth on Trafalgar Square.

Alnwick cascade marks completion of half the project
A £7m water garden phase at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is nearing completion, boasting a grand cascade fuelled by pump rooms and computer controlled panels.

Arts Council under fire
The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has been slammed for allowing over £8m to be lavished on the Centre for the Visual Arts in Cardiff, without adequate checks on how the money was spent.

Auditor General for Wales, Sir John Bourn, told the Welsh Assembly that the Arts Council ignored the warnings of its own inspectors that the project was not progressing well.

Plea for parks
In the last 20 years, local authority budget cuts have resulted in the loss of historic features in nearly 75 per cent of England's parks, with 25 per cent losing basic visitor facilities, according to English Heritage.
