Next step in Sheffield's museum transformation
Sheffield's City Museum and Mappin Art Gallery are embarking on stage two of their £15m refurbishment plans.

Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust received stage one approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its plans to refurbish the adjoining Victorian buildings earlier this year. The HLF earmarked £11.5m for the scheme, and awarded £444,000 to develop extensive plans for stage two submission.

Longleat wins Family Attraction of the Year award
Longleat has been voted Family Attraction of the Year in the Good Britain Guide 2002.

The Greatest Show on Earth
Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, yesterday launched London's largest ever theatre and restaurant promotion.

Announced last month as part of a £4m package to help businesses badly affected by the events of September 11, The Greatest Show on Earth is a £500,000 cash injection to provide up to 60,000 subsidised theatre tickets at £10, £15 and £20, as well as restaurant vouchers and free bus tickets.

The Aquarium of the Lakes
The Aquarium of the Lakes is to start work this month on a £600,000 re-development programme, including a new audio-visual theatre and a redesigned otter enclosure.

Bid for natural World Heritage status
England should soon be able to boast its first natural World Heritage site - a 95-mile stretch of fossil-rich coastline between Studland Bay in Dorset and Exmouth in Devon.

The Unesco World Heritage Committee meets in Helsinki this month to decide whether a bid by Dorset and Devon County Council (DDCC) and the Dorset Coast Forum to award the coast World Heritage status is successful.

Transformation at Oceanarium
Work has got underway on the £700,000 redevelopment of the Oceanarium in Bournemouth.

The attraction will close during the redevelopment, which will add a rainforest-themed entrance area with tropical displays, a new café and shop, and Turtle Beach - a realistically themed beach area for a pair of rescued green turtles.

Visitor numbers soared early this month on the first weekend of free access to many museums across England.

Museum unveils Phase Two of Darwin Centre
The Natural History Museum has announced that Scandinavian architects CF Møller and Partners will design phase two of the museum's new Darwin Centre.

New line of family amusement rides
Interactive Rides, the manufacturer of amusement rides, has unveiled the Sky Skater and Sky Skater Extreme.

National Trust to move to Swindon
