New BTA appointment
Kumar Muthalagappan has been appointed to the Board of the British Tourist Authority. The appointment took effect form 1 March 2002 for a period of four years. He succeeds Patrick McKenna.

BTA chair, David Quarmby, said: 'Kumar will bring a regional perspective to the board, together with direct personal experience of the hospitality business which we will greatly value.'

Glasgow Tower closed for repairs
The centrepiece of the Glasgow Science Centre will be closed for at least two months after engineers discovered the £10m Glasgow Tower has sunk by around 15mm.

The tower, which opened in October 2001 as part of a £75m Millennium project, is a 400ft structure that turns through 360 degrees with up to 15 people in an observational pod. Since its opening it has attracted nearly 40,000 visitors.

Keeper killed at Viennese zoo
Three jaguars have killed a keeper at the Schoenbrunn Palace Zoo in Vienna as she went into their cage to feed them.

The 21-year-old woman came into contact with the jaguars after a gate, which should have kept the cats out of the cage, was left open.

Zoo director, Helmut Pechlaner, who tried to save the keeper, was also badly mauled.

Interlink supplies log flume in Northern France
Interlink is installing a log flume ride at the Parc St Paul, theme park in northern France.

The installation at the small family park owned by Mr Gilles Campion will be built on a sloping site with Interlink carrying out the installation work.

Theme park for Hungary
Leisure and tourism development specialists, Deighton International, has been awarded the contract to develop the Karpatia Theme Park in Hungary.

Ticket swindle at Eiffel Tower
Eiffel Tower employees may have stolen more than £2m in entrance money in a long running scam uncovered by managers this week according to a report in The Times newspaper.

A police investigation is due to be launched after an internal inquiry revealed that thousands of tickets could have been sold without the proceeds being recorded since computerised ticketing equipment was installed in 1993.

Palace pop concert
Free pop and classical concerts will be held at Buckingham Palace this summer as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The two open-air concerts, Prom at the Palace on June 1 and Party at the Palace on June 3, will be held in the garden of Buckingham Palace, and will include a champagne picnic. 12,000 people, chosen by ballot, will be invited to each concert.

Easter opening for Blue Reef Aquarium
