£30m war collection opens in Manchester
The Imperial War Museum North opened in Trafford Park on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal on 5 July.

The museum has two exhibition areas, the main exhibition space and a separate gallery which will host a programme of exhibitions and will include modern and contemporary art and photographs from the Imperial War Museum's (IWM) collection.

Gulliver's Land sees phase II complete

ASA warns of drowning dangers
The Amateur Swimming Association has issued advice entitled Get Safe for summer, listing precautions and measures needed to protect against drownings.

The ASA figures show that among the under 16's, drowning remains the third largest cause of accidental death. Amanda Church, from the ASA says constant vigilance is vital: 'When someone gets into difficulty in the water, there is very little time in which to act.' .... More>>

Count Dracula plan looks for new blood
Plans to build a Count Dracula theme park in Romania have been abandoned after an international campaign against the project.

The mock Castle Dracula and surrounding vampire roller coasters will now not appear among the hills of Transylvania after both Prince Charles - a patron of a British society that supports the preservation of Romanian heritage and Greenpeace headed a major campaign against the plan.

HSE warns of firework dangers
A fireworks display that went badly wrong, resulting in one death and several injuries has prompted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to issue additional guidance.

The explosion of three roman candles, which were in steel tubes, caused the accident, which happened in Australia last year. The HSE says the explosion shattered the tubes sending high-speed steel fragments into the crowd.

Minister on resorts revival tour
Tourism minister Kim Howells is taking part in a Resorts Revival Tour to become better informed of 'the needs of English Tourism'.

Visiting resorts in East Anglia, Yorkshire and Humber, Lincolnshire, the South West and the North West he is to see 'showcase' organisations, stay in various types of accommodation and listen to holidaymakers' views on what is needed to 'ensure the future success of seaside resorts.'

Cruising market sails ahead of US
For the first time, UK ocean cruise passenger numbers have increased by more than those in the US, the world's largest cruise market.

The Passenger Shipping Association's (PSA) 2001 Annual Cruise Review says the UK cruise industry grew by 2.4 per cent last year with more than 890,000 Brits choosing an ocean, river or coastal cruise holiday. Ocean cruises increased by 2.9 per cent.

Kent colliery to become country park
A former colliery in Kent is to be transformed into a country park with an £18.8m investment from English Partnerships.

Betteshanger Colliery has a 243-acre spoil tip site which will become a country park, to include a Sustrans cycle link, a multi-purpose pavilion and a separate multi-use trail for other activities such as mountain biking and cyclo-cross.

British Museum announces sharp cuts to assuage debt
The British Museum is abandoning its multi-million pounds plans for a study centre as part of a £6.5m swathe of cuts.

Sir John Boyd, chair has announced a raft of cost-cutting incentives in a bid to solve the museum's worst ever cash crisis. Exhibition rooms could be closed permanently and a planned £60m research centre is to be scrapped.

Birds take on Eden
The Eden project's biomes are under attack by seagulls who think their own reflections are other birds.

The biomes are covered in plastic, pillow-like hexagons which are softer than glass, so the pecking birds are doing real damage.

The International Spy Museum opens its doors to the public next month.
The Washington site claims to be the world's first public museum dedicated to the history and the contemporary role of espionage.

London home for art collection
A collection of 700 works of art, including the largest private holding of Renaissance jewellery is soon to go on public display.

The Wernher Collection has been lent to the nation for 125 years after English Heritage formed an agreement with the Wernher Foundation. The collection will be on view to the public from 19 June at Ranger's House, in Greenwich Park, London.
