Isle of Man arts centre
The Isle of Man Arts Council is working with the Department of Education to convert a school hall into a community theatre. Work is scheduled to start on the site at Ballakermeen High School this June to create a 180-seat theatre, which will host local as well as professional performances. Scotland adopts consortium approach to boost tourism
A consortium of Scottish tourist boards has secured £4.1m of European Regional Development Funding to boost its marketing activities. The funding will be matched by the area tourist boards, which include Aberdeen and Grampian, Angus and Dundee, Kingdom of Fife, Perthshire and Argyll, allowing them to invest a total of £9.4m in marketing over the next three years. Bexhill museums to merge
Two independent museums in Bexhill, East Sussex, have begun plans to merge to form a new museum. The Bexhill Museum and Bexhill Costume Museum, which have already submitted a bid for the first stage of funding for a new building, want to amalgamate along with the Bexhill Motor Racing Heritage Group. Last days of dying swan
Worcester's Swan Theatre closes this month after failing to persuade Worcester City Council to restore its full funding to the theatre. The council's announcement that it would withdraw nearly two-thirds of its annual funding for the theatre prompted the Swan's board of directors to launch a campaign to save the theatre. Banyan Tree Gallery to run museum shops
Singapore's National Heritage Board (NHB) has chosen Banyan Tree Gallery (BTG) to operate the retail outlets in its four national museums. The four shops, totalling over 3,000 square feet in retail space, will be rebranded as 'Museum shop by Banyan Tree' when they open on 1 March 2003. The NHB runs four national museums - Singapore Art Museum, Singapore History Museum and two Asian Civilisation Museums.

Blackpool zoo win for Grant Leisure
Grant Leisure Group (GLG), part of the MICE Group, has won its bid to operate Blackpool Zoo. GLG currently operates the Bournemouth Oceanarium and Aquarium of the Lakes on Lake Windermere through its operating subsidiary Real Live Leisure. It takes over the running of the zoo from Blackpool council - the local authority in England to own, operate and licence a zoo - which realised that further investment

Eureka! wins centre of excellence grant

Glasgow science centre picks new CEO
After an uncomfortable hiatus, the Glasgow Science Centre (GSC) has appointed a new CEO and a new director of exhibits and programmes. Brian Weddell comes on board as chief executive. Formerly chief executive of Firepower, the Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich, Weddell also has senior experience at the Earth Centre in Doncaster. London still favoured by US tourists
The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) says London is still the favourite international destination for US tourists, with Dublin entering the winter top ten for the first time, according to the ASTA/Fodor's Winter Hot Spots Survey. London received 19.3 per cent of the votes, beating third-placed Paris (12.6 per cent) and Rome (7.5 per cent in fourth). Mexico is US tourists' country to travel to outside the US
