Classic Award for National Railway Museum
The National Railway Museum (NRM) has won the Classic Award at the Museum and Heritage Show Awards for Excellence. Since becoming the first national to open outside London in 1975, the Museum has been extended to include three large halls spread across 17 acres of land close to York City centre. Lights to turn Thames into river of colour
The river Thames in London is to bathed in a new light, reports The Sunday Times. The river is to become a 'watercolour' illuminated at night in a £5m arts project. Almond Valley named as Scottish Museum of the Year
Almond Valley Heritage Centre has been named Scottish Museum of the Year 2002. Recent developments recognised were a new fossil section, a laboratory area for children, improved interpretation for the shale oil industry, a new museum store, a picnic barn for groups and a new entrance hall and shop. Live modelling for Baltic Centre
Sculptor Antony Gormley is casting 240 Geordies, aged between five and 95, in plaster for one of the largest exhibitions in Britain. Gormley is to use the casts to create a 'sparkling myriad of stainless steel elements' - a series of body shapes for a project to be called Domain Field. North Down aims to top maritime destination

Regional museums renaissance begins
Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries has announced the three English regions selected to spearhead a new government-funded programme to revitalise regional museums and galleries. The north-east, west-midlands and south-west will be in the first phase of the 'Renaissance in the Regions' initiative, in which Resource is channelling a total of £70m of new investment to the regions over four years.
