£110m holiday resort for Cornwall
Property developer, The Ampersand Group, has unveiled plans for a £110m holiday resort at Carlyon Bay on the south coast of Cornwall.

The Beach At Carlyon Bay, designed by architects Shalev and Evans, will include 500 seafront apartments and a boutique hotel, as well as a commercial sector offering leisure and retail facilities.

London Boroughs invited to prove tourism commitment
London Tourist Board and Convention Bureau (LTB) is inviting entries from London boroughs and their partners for the Local Tourism Initiative Award 2003, part of the annual London Tourism Awards.

The award, developed in partnership with the Association of London Government, has been established in recognition of the important role local authorities play in the development and management of tourism to London.

Birmingham bid to host Athletics Grand Prix
As part of its bid to be named European Capital of Culture in 2008, Birmingham has set its sights on hosting an IAAF Athletics Grand Prix and the British Olympic Trials.

Strand Palace Hotel foyer on display at V & A
Art Deco 1910-1939, an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum opens this week.

One of the highlights of the exhibition will be original architectural features from the foyer of the Strand Palace Hotel in London.

Designed by Oliver P Bernard in 1930-1, the foyer made use of both traditional and new materials and introduced new uses for glass and lighting.

Europa-Park wins web award
German leisure park, Europa-Park has been awarded the GateCentral Award 2002.

London hotels hard hit in 2002
A survey by accountants PKF reveals that the London hotel market showed a disappointingly slow and patchy recovery in 2002.

The 30th edition of London Trends 2003, sponsored by EC Harris and accredited by the London Tourist Board, shows average room rate was worst hit, falling 5.9 per cent to £102.26. Occupancy rose slightly to 74.2 per cent, up 2.1 per cent, but room yield dropped 4 per cent to 75.88 per cent. .... More>>

Tough year for visitor attractions predicted
In an interview with Leisure Management, Laurence Newman, founder of Big Picture Consulting, has said visitor attractions face a tough year.

Marina for Londonderry
Planning permission has been granted to build a 50-berth marina on the river Foyle in Londonderry.

Chief executive of the port, Brian McGrath, says in time there may be scope for more berths and possible land-based leisure facilities.

Virus fears for third Briton
Another suspected victim of the deadly pneumonia virus is fighting for his life today in the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, reports the Evening Standard.

The patient, a man from London who had just flown in from the Far East, is thought to be the third Briton in the last week to contract Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Lower growth expected at Disney
At Disney's recent AGM in Denver, company chief financial officer, Tom Staggs, said the company's hopes of increasing earnings by more than 25 per cent in 2003 could be affected by events in the Middle East.

The company said late last year it expected earnings to grow by 25-30 per cent, but was now expecting more moderate growth for the year.
