More magic from Merlin
Leisure operator, Merlin Entertainments, has reported strong growth for the financial year ending February 2003.

Turnover was up 9 per cent to £29.3m, compared with £26.8m for 2001/2, and EBITDA rose 12.5 per cent to £9m - a figure exceeding the company's expectations - against £8m for the previous year.

Visitor numbers across the group's 22 attractions in eight countries were in excess of 5m during the period. .... More>>

New Space Center for Germany
It has been announced that the Space Center indoor theme park at Space Park Bremen will open on 19 December.

Being a part of Germany's first integrated entertainment and shopping centre, the official grand opening of the Space Center will take place on 12 February 2004. Between the two dates the site's attractions will be open to visitors at a special preview price.

Revenues up but Euro Disney reports a loss
Euro Disney SCA, operator of the Disneyland Resort in Paris, has reported an 8 per cent increase in revenues for the half year to 31 March.

Theme park attendance, hotel occupancy and average guest spend were all up, helped by the opening in March 2002 of the Walt Disney Studios Park.

However, due to the global downturn in tourism, the increased turnover did not meet the company's original estimates.

A$40m tourism funding package for Victoria
Australian state, Victoria's, A$8.5bn tourism industry will gain A$40.6m in funding over the next four year, under the terms of the State budget just announced.

Tourism minister, John Pandazopoulos, said the package would include:

• A$10m over four years for international marketing

• A$15m over three years to maximise return on existing events and to secure new events for the state

Stock exchange quote for Tussauds?
Private equity firm Charterhouse Development Capital has been in discussions with a number of City banks about the possible disposal of the Tussauds Group.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has announced the appointment of Penelope, Viscountess Cobham, Martin George, Digby Jones and Alan Parker to the Board of VisitBritain.

Ramoji Movie Magic park close to reality
Ramoji Film City, a leader in film, tv, print media and leisure entertainment, is developing the largest movie theme park in south-east Asia.

Capitalising on the drawing power of the existing Ramoji Film City, the first phase of the new Ramoji Movie Magic Park is slated to open in mid-2004.

Arts Council overspend criticised
A review by the National Audit Office (NAO) of 15 major Arts Council England (ACE) projects concludes that most are performing as planned, however, many ran over budget.

NAO head, Sir John Bourn, said: It is pleasing that most of the 15 projects are now delivering the intended benefits to the public.

Mickey takes a hit
The Walt Disney Company has reported income for the quarter to 31 March showing a 12 per cent drop to $229m, on revenues up slightly at $6.3bn.

The Parks and Resorts sector saw a fall in income - down 45 per cent - with the quarter's $155m comparing badly with $280m at the same time last year.

Record number of UK beaches pass Good Guide test
A record number of the UK's beaches are recommended in this year's Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Good Beach Guide - launched today.

A total of 421 beaches are recommended - over half of Britain's bathing waters. This is 80 more than last year and the largest annual increase since the guide was first published 16 years ago.

Newcastle wins tv culture poll
Newcastle/Gateshead has won a BBC viewers poll to select the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
