Gulbenkian Prize winner announced
The National Centre for Citizenship and the Law (NCCL) has been named as the winner of the first Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries.

The prize is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which has guaranteed prize money of £100,000 for the next five years.

Titanic on display in South Kensington
Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition has opened at London's Science Museum and will run until 28 September 2003.

Culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, has announced four new appointments to the England Marketing Advisory Board.

EMAB will support newly launched tourism body, VisitBritain, in marketing England domestically as a holiday destination by providing strategic advice to both VisitBritain and government ministers.

Von Däniken banks on the attraction of mysteries
Sci-fi author, Eric von Däniken's latest vision is to come true with the opening of Mystery Park in Interläken, Switzerland, on 24 May.

Government backs London's bid for the Olympics
Culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, has announced the government will back London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

She said a bid would be good for sport, good for London and good for the whole of the UK.

Secret of Saatchi's success
The newly opened Saatchi Gallery in London is enjoying a surge of art lovers keen to see a retrospective of Damien Hirst and other iconic works of contemporary art.

Coal Mining Museum visitor success
After a £6.5m re-development and the introduction of free admission for visitors, the National Coal Mining Museum says it has had its 'most successful year'.

Business trips boost tourism
Research from VisitBritain on English domestic tourism reveals growth in visits and spending from business trips within England last year.

The figures indicate that business tourism growth outstripped growth in the holiday sector, which was reported as stable. Business trips in England accounted for just over 14 per cent of all trips, and increase of 4 per cent in 2002.

Tramway village awards
Crich Tramway Village, home of the National Tramway Museum, has won two Heritage Awards.

The first award was for Oporto 273, the most recent tram to be restored in its collection.

The tram was awarded joint winner in the Heritage Railway Association Carriage & Wagon Competitions. Oporto 273 was restored over a three-year period with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

North east tourism on the increase
Tourism businesses in the north east report that trade has increased over the last six months and expect the trend to continue over the next six months, according to a survey by the Northumbria Tourist Board.

More than half the 251 businesses included in the survey reported increased trade over the last six months, when compared to the same period in 2001/2.

Three charged over park shooting
Two young men and a 17-year-old girl have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at Paramount Canada's Wonderland park near Toronto.

Both men have been charged with first-degree murder, while the girl is to face weapons charges.
