World's longest waterslide coming to Malaysia

A record-breaking waterslide is coming to Malaysia's Escape Theme Park, with the new attraction set to break the record for world's longest waterslide when it opens in August.

The attraction in Teluk Bahang, Penang, will stretch 1,140m (3,740ft), far exceeding the current record-holder – the 605m (1,985ft) slide at Action Park in New Jersey, US.

Called, the Escape, the slide will thread its way for more than a kilometre, stretching from a nearby hillside and depositing riders into the theme park's swimming pool. The height of the slide is 70m (230ft), and a slide will take around four minutes to complete.

Escape Theme Park's chief executive officer Simon Choo Kheng said concern for the environment has seen the project attempt to maintain as much of the greenery on the site as possible. He also said in local media reports that getting the record was not the original objective ‒ rather it was to "enable visitors to view the whole park".

The hillside will also be the start of other rides, such as luge, zip coasters and sliding tubes. A 400m-long (1.312ft) cable car with 30 seats is also due for completion around the same time as the waterslide, enabling visitors to get to the top of the ride.

All too often complaints ring out about the world going “health-and-safety mad”. For a reminder of how much times have changed, in the attractions industry especially, try watching 1980s footage (see below) of Action Park in New Jersey, US. The headline-hitting theme park — where numerous injuries and at least six fatalities were recorded — closed in 1996. Now it’s in the news again, having re-opened on June 14th under the stewardship of the founder’s son, Andrew Mulvihull.
